Moore was realist and common sense philosopher. According to him, existence of object is real and what our common sense say is true. Hence in an article “Refutation to idealism”, he tries to condemn and refute idealism and proves that an existence of object in an external world doesn’t depend on any way upon human perception.
However, in this essay Moore doesn’t examine the basic tenets of idealist philosophy i.e. reality is fundamentally spiritual. However, Moore argues that if ie can be shown that the proposition Esse est percipi is not true then super structure of idealist philosophy would be destroyed because whole idealist philosophy hinges upon the fundamental thesis i.e. “to be is to be perceived” i.e existence implies perception or existence of the external world cannot be without perception.
To condemn Esse Est Percipi, Moore employs various methods like Analytic or logical method and metaphysical method. In former, he examines various alternatives of the expression Esse Est Percipi and found that in each of the alternative, the proposition doesn’t hold true. In later he hold that awareness and content of awareness of any object are different but idealists have taken them as identical.
