Satkaryavada theory is one of the central features of the Sankhaya School. The Sankhaya’s metaphysics is based on the theory of causation. The basic question involved is- “Does the effect pre-exists in tits material cause?”
Nyaya-Vaiseshek answered it in negative, hence their theory of causation is called Asatkaryavada or Arambhavada i.e effect is the new creation and cannot exists before it is produced.
But according to Sankhaya, the effect pre-exists in the cause. The effect is the modification of the cause. The effect is only the explicit manifestation which was implicitly present in the material cause, therefore Sankhaya advocated the doctrine of Satkaryavada. There is neither new production nor utter detruction but only modification of one form to another. Further, Satkaryavada classified into Parinamcada and Vivartavada.
There is real and complete transformation of material cause in Parinamvada. Example- milk fully converted into curd, not half curd and half milk. Moreover, when there is only reflection of another object in the perceived one, it is called Vivartavada. Ex- rope perceived as snake.
